Lyuba has been traveling south for days, departing swordbreak, on a route for the crashed battleship that was and still is the seat of Communist authority on the planet. CBSS soldiers have been given the respect and attention of the freedom fighters, coming to rescue them when the workers rebellion stood on the knife edge.
The danger thus far has been from the snow, and the conditions. The crashed ship will be in sight in a few moments, just over a hill you're about to climb. From there, it is hoped the Communist leaders there will resupply you for your trek into the mountains, to the village of Frostford, where locals are trying to explore the geothermal caves their settlement has been built atop. There are reports of things in the darkness of the tunnels that run from light, and when called out- and anyone with an ounce of scouting potential has been called there to assist.
14:31
Naturally, this makes it a perfect job for a CBSS scout pioneer, left behind in the administrative chaos of a withdrawal from a combat zone
Public bio:
Lyuba was born on Vadhat during the bad old capitalist days. He was raised by his parents in a small hab unit with 4 other siblings. His parents were loyal to the old ways, seeming a loss of individualism even though they were at the bottom of the rung. Lyuna, living in the old times, was eager to improve his family's standing by joining the army and making a name for himself. But one thing that never changes between powers is logistics and getting caught up in clerical errors. Stuck on this lame duck planet of no glory Lyuba looks to make some of his own.(edited)

Day 1:
20:31
Lyuba begins his day dressing for his morning scouting of the area when the official notice of scouts being needed comes down the chain. Immediately, he goes off to find the lead officer of his unit to get clearance for this mission(edited)
(is it Lyuba or Lyuna? the character sheet says Lyuba, so its what Ive named everything else. Do i Need to fix that?)
20:32
(also, you're already on this mission, you're about to get to the crashed ship at the base of the mountain, no need to sign up for it, since its already going on)
You make it to the crashed ship, a battleship once, now a large salvaged wreck, forever bound to the surface of this world. You're permitted aboard, and the crew who turned into its live-in villagers sell you ten of them, now that their supply lines are free of getting raided by corporate soldiers. THe fighting here has been over for a few months now, and their bastion overlooks both the mountain pass you need to take, and the surrounding, much flatter countryside.
Lyuba then remebers he likes to eat and tries to get a weeks worth of rations from the cook before he ventures out. He looks at his planetary map and goes on foot to the countryside and towards the caves.
They’ll likewise provide provisions. They’re not going to be enjoyable but if it’s eat them or die, eating them seems to be a kinder fate.
North of the wreck is the mountain pass you need to take to reach frostford, a human town built next to the caves you need to access. The climb itself to get there is expected to take about a day.
You climb as best you can, avoiding possible sites of avalanche, sites of rock falls, and the tracks of predatory wildlife over the course of your day of travel. As night begins to fall upon the mountainside, you can barely make out the backlit ice and metal walls of Frostford ahead of you. Human sentries patrol the walls, and near the gate to get in- you can only see their shadowy outlines with the strong, setting sunlight behind them
Lyuba turns his glowbug on its brightest setting and approaches making it clear hes there so as not to spook the sentries and show off his CBSS ensignia. Asking for entry into town.
He looks at the emblem on your jacket, and nods.
"Alright, might want to wait for morning, bunkhouse is empty though, and should be warm. Emblem will get you a meal for tonight"
14:40
(probably makes sense to get some rumors from the locals anyway about what might be in the caves aside from your quarry)
(exactly my thought)
"Thanks,"
Lyuba begins to follow Emblem and starting some small talk
"So Emblem is it? I am Lyuba but I'm not from this world. Do you know much about these caves and what is inside them?"
Ooutside the boarding house w here you've been permitted to stay for the night, a few of the older folks in the town seem to have gathered to smoke pipes and talk about the events of the day, and are enjoying a quiet night
"Ah yes, I came from that old battleship by foot actually. Im supposed to go do some surveys tomorrow."
Lyuba sparks up and takes a small drag
"Oh this is kinda good compared to the stuff in the barracks. So yeah I am headed out to these old caves supposedly. Know if I need to worry about much out there?"
"Vision, for the most obvious thing. The other is a way to mark or track your route. Don't want you getting lost in the dark down there. Those caves twist and turn, and intersect one another."
"I've a knife to mark on walls easy enough and a supply of glowbugs for at least two days I think. But all said and done that is some good advice"(edited)
"thank you for your wealth of knowlage and such a relaxing smoke sir. May we all be better for it. I should be on my way to the mayor less you need anything from me?"
Lyuba thanks them and heads off towards the barracks and sleeps the night away and will try and speak to the mayor in more reasonable hours before his trip out
20:10
Once the sun is shining Lyuba knocks on the mayors door.
"You have sharp eyes sir. I am Lyuba Lebedeva of the CBSS scouts. My current mission is to investigate the cave systems that keep giving us strange readings. I seemed to have come unprepared though. You see my unit didnt have a nav-comp and your villagers say its more intense than marking walls down there. They also mentioned you have one. As the truth of thr CBSS is we all should work together to become better I would like to offer my services to you if you can find a need for them to utilize your needed asset."
“If you’re planning to go into the cave there is one thing. There’s no doubt the bodies of other scouts down there. If you find anything you could bring back to the families, I’ll lend you the nav computer.
The sound and gentle glow of distant magma is the first thing you notice as you step onto the cave. This far in humans have traveled and you see signs warning you about the hazards
Lyuba whispers a brief luck saying and taps the warning signs.
"The risk of business is worth the payout. 'Sigh' May your old capitalist sayings protect me this day."
(Do the signs warn of any Hazzard in particular?)
(Excellent)
Lyuba moves through the cave activating their Glowbug and checking their lazer pistol charge. Briefly investigating the entrance area before moving up to the bridge over the lava.
A small carin has been made here by the locals, memorializing people who have gone into the depths and never returned. There are at least 20 names here and small piles of stones have been left in front of them
Lyuba tries to memorize the names and takes a photo on his com-pad as he pushes forward to the bridge. Investigating the bridge for its safety to use and over the edges to see if he can spot any lost souls or something.
This close to the surface, the townsfolk likely would have recovered any bodies themselves. THe bridge looks safe, the slate planks warm but not hot from the running magma below.
The other side is in darkness just beyond the far bridge posts, but you can hear bats and other native life stirring.
A flock of bats scatters at the sudden light, flying overhead, as you reach the other side of the bridge. A small chamber to the left, and right, are both present, but you can also continue forward
"Damn" lyuba thinks to himself. He marks the location down in his compad. As well he as carefully as he can takes his knife and takes some bone shavings. Maybe they can identify them this way. Lyuba takes a cursory peak around for anything eyecatchig before heading out to the room on the right.(edited)
It seems like you’ve got everything there is to see in here. The bone shavings Will hopefully be able to have some identification attached to them once you return to the settlement.
Small crystal growths extend from the walls in this room. They shine with the reflected light of the lava nearby , though are a smoky gray rather than the more traditional colors of gemstones you have seen before. Abandoned mining tools are scattered around the base of the veins here
The crystals in the wall aside from their odd color, seem to have some sort of vapor, or smoke under their crystal shells. You're not sure what might be suspended inside.
The mining tools are fairly new, and hardly show the signs of hard use. There is no sign of the miners
Nothing appears in the database, meaning this is an entirely new discovery. Metaspace sensors have now been worked into most scanning devices, and it registers faintly on that spectrum, but the machine is unable to discern more.
"Huh..." Lyuba thinks to himself. And puts the scanner away. He then sits down trying to remember all the techniques he learned from his brief observation at the trials before the CBSS came. Focusing inwards and trying to ignore all else besides thr crystal he expends effort to try and glimpse if this thing has any kind of thought for itself and uses lvl 0 telepathy to see if it has emotions.
Sweat beading down his face he takes a deep breath and notes down these crystals for his mission log. Without a medic nearby it would be too risky to interact just yet with these strange stones. He packs up and moves on to the bend.
The site is marked in the navcomp, and polity records will be updated. Sometime down the road, you or others can figure out what might be happening there.
Around the bend, the light from your glowbug is having trouble slicing through the incredibly dense gloom. You can see another rich vein with these same crystals in it, though on the walls it looks like there are drag marks, like someone or something has been carried away
Lyuba considers the marks on the ground. Before he investigates further he pulls out his Lazer pistol and knife attaching the glow bug to the gun. He then would attempt to see what tracks were left in the drag marks.
(I was thinking on using my survival kit on this if there was a check if thats applicable?)
(alright, looking at the description of a survival kit, i dont think anything in there at face value would be of a benefit to the point where a bonus can be applied)
20:37
(the whole reason you're here is because of an unknown danger or dangers, so a book on known dangers on top of a bunch of not tracking/hunting related tools doesn't really seem like it would do anything)
(good good also out of curiosity in your universe do Lazer weapons have a stun setting? If not do any besides a stun buton?)
After going through all the possibilities he can feasibly think of lyubas stress rises. It seems to be time for first contact. And he tries to follow the drag marks as far as he can. Weapons readied but no held actions.(edited)
The camp site ahead has recently been abandoned. You can see the logs are still smoldering and more importantly , there is wood here, despite the village not having many standing trees in it.
05:20
The ascent up the mountain was also relatively without vegetation
"... What in the god dammed?!?!"
Lyuba after seeing the smoldered logs leaves him with confirmed presence down here. That being said he will investigate the site to gain any sense of who could have been here before looking for footprints garbage left behind even if there is waste hidden in a corner.
The prints are blocky, far too wide and rectangular for human feet or any sort of practical shoe they might be wearing. The method of starting the fire, well, there does not seem to be any, as though it was something that is second nature for whatever did this. You see no evidence of flint knapping, chemical accelerant, or even the tell tale residue of match ignition.
"Hmm" "Maybe some kind of alien good to know."
Lyuba packs up and heads on going right when he enters the spliting path and investigate the small alcove on the right wall.
there is a large seam here. It is too small for you to fit into , but the drag marks lead toward it. There is undoubtedly something else down here making a home
Lyuba after their investigation moves down towards the lava stream.
(If he can see the alcove he might try to move to it. Has he seen any rope anywhere in this complex?)(edited)
(I don’t think you’d be able to see it from the bank since the angle is so sharp and I feel like semi flammable rope over a lava river is one of those high risk things we should maybe not vault right into )
You can see more growths of the strange gems are the edge of the lava stream. You can also see obsidian has formed here along with crusts of valuable metals. It’s uncommon to see so many in such abundance and with such layering, such as they are
"This place is virtually a treasure trove of wealth for the Polity. Why would the workers abandon such a valuable place?!"
Lyuba would use the survey scanner and take a bit to activly send out the report on his compad so if nothing else they will get this information. (If its blocked he won't). After all that he would move on to that open room to the right.
Moving up the passage you can see firelight ahead of you around the corner. You can also hear voices chatting in a deep rumbling language that you do not know the words of
(7) There is a loose stone kicked by the front of your boot and whatever is at the camp site flees. You can see a burning fire and what looks to be a wounded human wrapped in a swaddle bag
Weapoms drawn Lyuba slowly move towards the human. Once next to them he will check to see if they can be moved and if so just over the shoulder and out of the caves to try and tend to them.
(Hes got an 18 str and is smart with a 14 maybe he can get them out and help them)
(... It appears my spam clicking did not in fact give me an 11. I have some bad internet at most of my sites. If you want me to take the first result of the spam id appreciate to use my expert reroll if you dont mind?)
(The first roll is fine. As to how they’re wounded it’s an irrelevance until we know the result of the check. I’ll have to try to check the roll20 chat later to get the results
(Well a 4 isn't going to do anything no matter what, so attempting at all is going to burn your re-roll. I guess I am just waiting to see if you do that or not. The rules you're reading generally relate just to PCs. If this roll fails the victim here is going to be beyond help. )(edited)
Yours unable to treat him effectively in time and the wounds are too grievous for him to recover from. He passes away in your arms.
The sounds are long raking marks like he was dragged over stones
There is nothing to reply but the warm thermal winds of the cave, and the soft bubbling of the magma around you in the various lava rivers. Whatever had been here heard you approach, and scattered long before your attempt at aiding the corpse before you now.
Lyuba sighs and holsters his weapons. And looks at the body of this person he couldnt save. And I think he weeps for a minuet. He couldn't do it. Couldnt save them. Because of this he gently lifts them up and slowly takes them out to the cave entrance.
"I am sorry I couldn't save you stranger. I hope you had all the living you needed done. May your light carry on."
Lyuba takes the time to carry their body back to the town
You can feel eyes on you, somehow, some way as you return back to the surface, now several hours later. The navcomp has a more complete picture of the tunnel system now-and for today you have done all the good you can.
In town, the body is identified, and the family takes it back with them for proper burial
You're left to your own devices once the family takes the body from you. Almost the entire day has passed down there, as your careful explorations mapped the beginning reaches of the cavern. Something is undoubtedly down there.
Lyuba thanks them for the medkit and jogs to the cave entrance clicks on his glowbug to his gun, entering slowly and steadily moving to that last room he was at then moving north.
You make better progress into the caves on Day 2, not needing to be as careful through the first leg of the journey. Approaching where you'd found the body the day before, you can see that the camp has since been packed up, and the only things left behind are a small blackened spot where the fire was once burning.
Lyuba thinks some dark thoughts about whatever these beings were who left this man to die. He is brought out of his reverie entering the first alcove on the left.
"Huh... Wonder if this means they are digging and bringing material deeper into the mine." Lyuba thinks.
(Does it look like the MES crystals were what was mined?)
MES crystals would register on survey scanners, since they've been found on other Galatea Council worlds. These smoky crystals not registering on your survey scanner indicates its a resource that has not been seen anywhere else
(Okay, didnt know that which makes this place even more interesting)
Lyuba moves on towards the ("stairs?") location but when he gets there he would wait and listen for a while hoping to hear more down the tunnle
Lyuba would try to slowly approach these voices so he can interject himself and not have them run away.
(Can I attempt to camouflage myself? This being a mine I would hope to try and muddy/ash up my face cover up any lights on my armor and just plain blend in)(edited)
You're able to make yourself blend into the background and darkness a bit better, breaking up your outline and some of the harsh angles that come with a modern combat uniform. Your war panoply is concealed with ash, and you move forward with your lights off. The cave is still dimly lit by the flowing magma, and you can see four rock like figures ahead of you, surrounding a much smaller fifth one.
It seems this runt is the object of their abuse
(Okay this should be interesting. Is there any way I could try and scare the Rocky folk off. Im thinking of using my compad to play some spooky sound and in addition hand shadow puppet something large and frightening. Lastly I was wondering if I could use a Type A battery as a psudo flash pop explosive? In the real world some batteries once punctured have their lithum batteries flair out into bright burning that peters out fast. If youd be okay with me destroying a few of them to make sudden bright fireballs (not damaging that be too much maybe) to add to the sudden spooky monster thing. but only if it makes sense with your universe and tech.)
23:31
(this is probs something like a preform with charisma I think as well with maybe a possible plus one advantage if you let me try a fix/int with the battery idea?)
(Let me digest all this and I’ll let you know what checks to do if any. The geon aren’t stupid they know what technology is , but you Ic wouldnt know that )
(I think a fix/int is fine. The other stuff doesn’t really have a hope of working here , because although they look like rocks they’re not as dumb like rocks )
(That sounds fine. I think I'll just try and rush them and hope I can cause them to fail a moral check. Hoping they are spooked by sudden appearance of the rando dark shape sending poppers at them)
(I’m not going to elaborate on what mechanics may or may not be in place. I’ve read what you posted and told you what we would need to roll to resolve this. Please don’t infer I’m going to do things or have encounters work ways you think they should work. This is how we got into a problem last time )
(No sweat I figured as much already just wanted to explain my thoughts before I roll. You're the DM, I just wanna lay it out as much as I can so I don't sideswipe you. Want me to roll for my makeshift popper now, if I've made my plan of action well enough for you?)
(I just don’t want you to think it’s going to go a certain way and it doesn’t and then the expectations are different so frustrations Mount. Neither of us need that )
(Honestly thanks. It is sobering to hear that fully and put out there. I do agree with how you've put it foreward too. I think my plans good but as any plan goes only as well as a dice roll can. I feel like im ready for success or failure on this. Plus I am not afraid to run the hell away! )
01:36
(Actually one thing before all this. There was mentioned some stuff about how all information on the World Anvil was common knowlage or something but I've purposly left the Geon page alone cuz my char didnt know what was in here. Would it be reasonable for my char to know about Geon or not? In addition I still havent filled out my bounus language slot due to my +1 int)
01:36
(If you dont mind could I fill that with Geon?)
01:37
(Ya know unless it doesnt make sense/they arent geon)
(Agreed just thought in the moment and wanted to have a ya or nay cuz it would affect things)
01:39
(Besides that I think Lyuba would act. Just more conservativly)
01:41
Lyuba seeing the runt being harried watches for a moment and decides to act. Not wanting to cause a large incident with natives he attempts to put together a popper using one of his A Type Batteries and distract the Rocky people of the cave.
(Sweet)
Lyuba pokes out just far enough so he can see and tosses the popper as far as he can into the hall hoping they get distracted and follow the noise.(edited)
The pop further down the tunnel sounds a few seconds later, and the Geon begin moving to ambush positions, leaving their victim behind to withdraw a few meters down the tunnel, spears facing outward to cover the avenues of approach.
Lyuba thinking for a second determines that this is his only shot to attempt to help the little rock person and show that he's not a threat but here to help. He pulls out his medkit and slides/tosses it over to the little rock person.
The Geon deeper in the cave see the medkit spinning through the air, landing next to their victim. Upon seeing the arc of where it has been thrown, they know where you are, and from 50m away begin to run toward your hiding place
You can hear the sounds of their pursuit but you are faster, Able to make it to the upper reaches of the cave before they catch you.
They retreat deeper into the cave, heading back to wherever it is theyve come from.
(Do they say/shout anything I can catch on my compad recorder? I feel like there is a route to this where I can get their language or find someone who can speak their language later)
(thats okay.)
Lyuba sits outside the cave hoping that the little rock man is feeling better. These are a fierce alien yet clearly could be useful to the CBSS not to mention the odd crystals of the caves. Yet he realizes he cant communicate and wasting such a resource like these aliens would be antithetical to the parties ideals. He would head back to the village and see if they have a com server to communicate with command.
"Hello Command,
This is Scout Lyuba Lebedeva on a mission to explore the cave systems giving us mysterious readings. I have discovered quite a lot there. A seemingly small group of what are possibly Geon living in the cave system. They are hostile towards outsiders but I do not have the skill to verbally communicate with them. I feel that with the help of a translator Torq specified towards the Geon language or a speaker of the Geon language would allow us to truly discover if these Geon like people are able to be negotiated with. In addition I believe I may have found a new kind of crystal. My limited ability with MES has shown they touch that mysterious branch of science but are unlike the MES crystals already known in the sectors at large. This substance is worth proper study and investigation but I cannot stress how much I believe we should attempt a peaceful interaction with the Natives.
They may be hostile enough to kill since when I entered I found a wounded man who later perished. It would be a waste to not negotiate and get their assistance in this operation to allow our invaluable workers to not be redirected here when there is already an able body work force if we can get them to work for the greater CBSS. As always I look to make myself most useful to my brothers and sisters of the CBSS. If instead we cannot get an interpreter I am prepared to mount an expedition to clear out the caves. Although with great reservation to that action being as they would be more useful to us cooperating.
I await feedback till then Command."
(Lyuba also would send any and all information he can to command that he's gathered like the samples he took and recorded in the caves.)(edited)
(If this isn't interesting or fun anymore, we can have the CBSS finish things here themselves. If you want to keep going, we'll send an interpreter to help you)
The CBSS responds that they will be sending an interpreter. Your mission is to keep them safe. Although he can communicate, those in the gave might not want to. Your mission is the safety of an existing party asset more than anything else.
(Either Woven Body Armor (400bb) or Combat Field Uniform (1000bb) for armor. As for weapons I would like to see if I can get a Stun Buton (50bb) or medium advanced weapon (60bb). lastly another Medkit (100bb), Rope 20m (4/40bb), Low Light Goggles (200bb), Grapnel Launcher (200bb), along with Trade metals (10bb) and goods. (50bb) (bb=base book price))
(They dont have trade metals available here, or other trade goods. They have woven armor not the CFU, both weapons are available. The other gear is available . just be mindful of readied/stowed items)
(Hell yeah youre right, yet I have had a bad run of luck lately with dice and ive got creds to spare honestly)
06:28
Till they arrive Lyuba spends their time getting to know the locals as well as dropping off that bone sample they found. (I forgot and didnt drop it off last time.)
The translator arrives within a few hours, and is equipped with woven armor. The Geon says little to you but otherwise seems ready to try to make contact. This one comes from Mehani, another frost locked world
"I've similar feelings on this. As far as I'm aware they are hostile to outsiders but it's probably from a language barrier you can fix. You're going to have to follow my lead in there until we find some of them. Then it's on you and I to not spook them when we reveal ourselves. You think your ready to handle that? If so get your pack and lets move."
You approach the site of where you had thrown the medkit to the fallen Geon a day before. The medkit has been smashed, the fabric torn apart and most importantly, the fallen Geon has remained here. When you fled the others seem to have doubled back to finish tearing him to pieces. In one of his hands he has clutched a CBSS credit coin, a token of the surface world he was trying to make his way back to.
There is no sign of the geon that had done this here at the scene now.
Lyuba sighs quite disheartend by this callous killing. Knowing he has no context he pushes on trying to go deeper and find these Geon. He does take the CBSS credit coin though as a keepsake for what inaction does.
(I would like to move up here)
The sounds of grinding or rhythmic smashing are up ahead near the location you wanted to survey first. The translator seems to perk up as if listening and raises a hand for quiet. He moves to the side of the tunnel to get into concealment to allow himself to listen further.
After a few moments, he whispers.
"Geon are mining ahead. They're angry"
(no no not what I ment just trying to confirm that that is over and done with. I dont wanna come in there telling them something thats clearly not true)
(gotcha. Yeah the fighting here is over with, CBSS soldiers are acting as peacekeepers but there hasnt really been any ongoing violence at this point. Most people were happy to be free of the megacorps here)
(Thank you!)
"Alright Cobalt, I think these folks are in need of re-education. I want you to hopefully lure one or two of them out to speak to them with me running interfearance. Maybe if we're lucky they will listen to you when you say you genuinely wish to talk. Move back a ways so you have a headstart."
(While Cobalt moves back a bit and I will try and peak around with a small set of pebbles on the ground and target one of the Geon to get their attention and maybe have them move to find the source of their torment)
16:28
(if they come ill fall back to Cobalt then stealth and hope he can compeled to be chill with cobalt. else if he attacks I will be ready with my stun baton)
The throw is accurate and he is hit on the back of the head. The geon turns around, and then seems to go back to mining, thinking he was just imagining things after one shallow blow.
He seems to be searching for the source of the stones, unsure where they might have come from- but the rapid succession of hits has him sure that they were not natural or his mind playing tricks on hm
Lyuba would try to hide in the shadows as best as he could letting Cobalt talk to him.
(If it looks like the Geon makes a move to harm Cobalt I will Jump in with my stun baton and attack him).
22:56
(Also sorry ive been out so long just life ya know)
(Ah! I told him to say he and a envoy are here to end the fighting on the surface. If they agree to a meeting their leadership and the CBSS can negotiate terms.)
There is a moment of shouting as the geon is surprised before the two begin to talk. It seems like now is the time to bring up any points you want to make
"We understand that our people have caused much chaos and dissatisfaction with you and your fellow people. The CBSS is not a deaf and uncaring people, we were unaware of any civilization under the planet and as our manifesto states each and every worker has a voice and a duty to progress for the benefit of us all. We wish for you to pick a spokesman to come and speak to our leadership and negotiate and air out your grievances. If that is not amenable to you we will formally send one to you."
He will have to carry this message back to his tribe and they will have to decide how best to approach this offer. For now, all you can do is retreat to the surface and see when someone will decide to come out of te cave
(Shoot that went way better than I expected it to!)
Lyuba nods his acceptance of their offer.
"I shall await your response. I plan to strike up a tent outside of the entrance tomorrow. If I am not there there is a village nearby who I will inform that they may get visitors who need to use the CBSS Com system."
02:25
(If they need nothing else from me I would leave properly and head back to town buying a tent and supplies for a few days for me and Cobalt)
(they don't need anything else right now. I don't know if you necessarily need to be part of negotiations either so if you wanted to move into something else we can.
3xp and 5000 credits for this)
(you dont have any languages listed on your sheet at all so i dont know what you have and don't have)
03:48
(I'll pick through your thread and our messages and see if we set that out anywhere, but if we didn't i dont feel comfortable awarding it now since we didn't keep our stuff in order)
(this is the sum total of our discussion on the topic. You would start with common, and would have known one other language from the beginning due to your +1 intelligence modifier, but you wouldn't be able to pick up any others until either improving your modifier or spending downtime. There was also never any dsicussion in thread or in PM about what languages you'd have actually taken)
(Thats due in part I had never taken one. We talked about me choosing Geon but it was a little too meta for the moment so I wanted to pick it afterwards to make some consistancy. If thats not okay im willing to pick another.)
(I’ll tag them here so they can scroll up and see what’s happened already)
13:15
@OddCore and his partner land in Frostford, just as the sun is coming up on another frosty mountain day.
Humans and a few geon mill about the settlement and the landing of your shuttle draws most of the attention of this town.
Perched on a mountain side with ice walls ringing the settlement and a massive cave network at its back, Frostford shows how industrial CBSS workers can be as they tap the geothermal heat here for warmth, power, and recreational hot springs
Kolbeckite and Pyrophanite dismount the shuttle and it bounces gently as they do so, relieved by their weight. Kolbeckite's eyes languish on the scenery. Pyrophanite scans the surroundings in a practiced warrior's manner.
They both wear simple, practical clothing that seems as well fitting as it seems out of place, covering their rocky forms that one would assume, need no shame nor protection from the elements. They are no CBSS uniforms however, marking them as civilians.
They both take in the people witnessing their arrival, Kolbeckite looking for ranking CBSS officer uniforms or anyone looking like they're in charge, and Pyrophanite relaxing into a lazy gaze as he feels more confident the place poses no threat.
Lubya and a geon are both waiting as the shuttle sets down and the two of you disembark. You remember Lubya's picture from the file as the explorer brave enough to enter the tunnels to try to find evidence of Geon or other things useful to the party down there.
the geon is an interpreter from elsewhere he had tried to hire, but upon realizing how far beyond this situation was from something they could handle it seemed prudent to bring you in.
The Geon approach the pair and greet both. Kolbeckite uses the language of the Mandate.
"Greetings, both. I am Kolbeckite and this is Pyrophanite. We are here to help smooth out relations with the Geon tribe the CBSS made first contact with. I believe you were the explorer we were briefed on?"
Kolbeckite looks at Lyuba calmly and awaits their response. Pyrophanite greets the Geon translator in the terse, rumbling native tongue of their kind.
"We will do what we can to help the situation. I'm afraid we weren't told much about the situation, only that you need help with relations. What is the CBSS hoping to achieve here, and what is the difficulty?"
"Well we have a tribe of Geon of unknown number in a cave with mineral resources that have peaked the CBSS interest. A sort of Psychic reactive crystal of unknown value.
Sadly the Geon were immensely hostile to the locals and I. Possibly being the cause of at least one death of a villager and officially killing one of their own. This hostility is from the fighting above ground by the old Megacorp and us. Somehow it affected them negatively.
My and the CBSS's goal here is to get them officially joining the CBSS willingly. this is so we can assist them from our actions and hopefully gain access to the unknown material that is in their territory. A sub goal would be to get justice for the persons that have died adventuring the caves of the local human population. I think a clean slate preventing any bad blood with everyone will be the best for stability in the long run.
Anything you need clarification on?"
Kolbeckite thinks on this, as he usually does. His brow furrows.
"I expect they will not willingly give free access to the crystal. It might hold cultural importance. If that is the case, it might take years of good relations without slipping before we're granted access to it. Joining the CBSS may take considerable time, too. My people are not known to rush into situations."
The Geon takes a pause. Then straightens his back with a symphony of cracks and rumbles.
"Let us meet with them. I believe peaceful negotiations are achievable, at the very least."(edited)
The cave entryway breathes heat and steam into the cold air. Lava channels inside create heat that the workers here have harnessed.
Lubya and his companion have been in these tunnels before and remember where the geon were mining , and in the absence of any of them coming out , heading in and returning to that site may be the best way to encounter them
It is Pyrophanite who speaks this time. His grasp on Mandate Common is not as strong as his friend, and his accent is thicker
"We will follow behind. Better for them to see a familiar face first."
Kolbeckite nods.
"Let's not startle them. Please, do scout ahead."
The group had taken a route going up the west side of the cave, crossed east toward the middle and went north to the northeast lava flow. At that lava flow we had seen the Geon miners previously.
On the way to the mining site the grey crystals are shown to the two Kolbekite and his companion. The bodies of human explorers who were not equipped for the conditions of the cave have also been passed by with degrading hand tools
Kolbeckite's piercing gaze falls upon the remains of the explorers.
"We should retrieve these bodies and try to identify them, then notify their families."
(Does Kolbeckite recognise the grey crystals at all?)
The geon scout moves forward and calls out to them. Six other geon are mining here and when called they set down their tools and begin walking over.
They are hardy , made of the brown/black rock these lava caverns are known for. Some of them are speckled with flakes of gems from the heat and pressure of working down here for so long
Turning towards Kolbeckite and Pyrophanite "It's kind of amazing your people. I only just got a grasp of your language but reading your general culture has been quite the treat for me."
Pyrophanite speaks up in his thick accent.
"It works well. There's good reason we find it easy to belong in the CBSS, without cooperation, family and unity there can be no future."
Kolbeckite greets the Geon that approach in their native tongue, as does Pyro.
[Geon] "Greetings brothers. I am Kolbeckite and this is my friend and associate Pyrophanite. Lyuba here briefed us on the situation. I am here to make sure your relationship with the CBSS is a happy and respectful one. Is it a good time to discuss the matter?"
This mine works seems to be as fast as they’re willing to go but two elder geon both with more Crystal in them from a much longer time underground come forward. One of them clings for a long polished rock staff of office.
18:18
“We are pleased to meet you. May our two families come together to find prosperity”
They do not know how to distinguish the CBSS from the other humans that are on this world and don’t seem to know how far exactly CBSs power spreads on the surface.
The fact that you control the entire surface is not knowledge they Have(edited)
Kolbeckite briefly explains the CBSS and its scope in the grand scheme of things as well as what it stands for.
"So you see, their values align with the values of our people and I believe it is through their unity and resources that we elevate our culture and our people. Besides having your community onboard the wider CBSS community, their people were hoping they would have a chance to study the crystals native to your caves. Would this be something you would be open to?"
"We would need substantial guarantees that the violence on the surface will end, and our cavers will remain our own. CBSS mining machines stripping our territory for the crystals and other valuable minerals is a well founded fear within some members of our community. We think their fear is reasonable.
What is to say giving to another group 'according to their needs' , is not going to mean we lose our homes and way of life, only to be buoyed back up by someone else suffering the same fate later"
(in common to Kolbeckite in their ear)
"I think that we could ethically trade for the minerals these folks supply fairly without stripping them wholesale. It would be slower and less profitable but in the end it would cause violent strife if we demand more. As for the violence we have ended the surface war fully and taken any of the others who may cause problems to that penal colony anyhow. I think that should be good. Maybe send them over some better mining equipment for free as a added bonus."
Kolbeckite listens to Lyuba, nodding along as he does. He then turns back to the elders.
[Geon] "The CBSS would like for you to know they have ended the surface war and have taken measures to remove any who might pose a threat to the stability they support and are trying to establish. They would also like for you to know that in the interest of a lasting peace and cooperation, they are willing to trade fairly with you for as many crystals as you are willing to part with, and can offer mining equipment of CBSS tech and engineering for your use, as a token of their appreciation and interest in continuing relations."
Kolbeckite chooses his words carefully. He makes his respect for the elders and the Geon community obvious.
They confer with each other for several moments before returning to negotiate with you more.
In exchange for the mining equipment they will part with a small selection of crystals with more added if the hand tools are in good condition.
They would also like to be furnished with other technologies upon entering the CBSS, namely medical technologies and things to make their labors easier.
A tentative agreement is struck. Upon reception of the tools, a small amount of the crystals and other minerals will be released and there will be an official partnership between the tribe and the cbss
Kolbeckite and Pyrophanite thank and gives their farewells to the Geon of the tribe and turn to Lyuba. Kolbeckite speaks.
"It is fortunate we were able to reach an agreement here today. Do you require our help further?"
He does not rush to leave, and offers to stay if he is needed further in honesty.
(I am game for that kind of mission if you are Kolbeckite)
05:31
(Also Nekosmash I just went through my goals again after all this time and I feel like ive achived some of them yet they were also seeming like main mission goals. you already approved them but Idk if they feel right anymore. Thoughts?)
05:32
(these two in particular:
-Get the local Geon Tribe on AL-THYNNIYAN to join the CBSS
-Survey the unexplored areas on AL-THYNNIYAN)
(You didn’t survey any unexplored areas aside from this little cave system. 90% of the planet hasn’t been surveyed so that ones not done.
You getting the local tribe located here was a couple missions of work so that xp is fine to be taken)
(ding! level 2 If Kolbeckite would be useful in the continuing process of setting this cooperation up he's up for being involved, that's why he asked if he's needed further. I suppose, could I then take a goal that is basically ensuring that transition/trade goes well, Neko? as a short term goal)
This town is a small one and getting supplies brought here in a manner quick enough to not seem like a prospective treaty violation means travel east to the cities of either Swordbreak, or South Warren to see if there are any industrial facilities there capable of honoring your request.
The CBSS is making slow inroads here. THere has been some party sponsored development but most of the aid flowing into the planet is being spent on repairing housing and essential services thus far. CBSS regular army peacekeepers are common fixtures on street corners in both settlements. The former mega-corporations here did not have many devotees or even friends among the population, but there is always an influx of general lawlessness that accompanies the change of authority on a planet.
(done leveling:
-Administration -1/0

Hp 14 to 15)
22:40
(Out of curiosity since I am unaware of how much development the MgC had here berfore. Are there any facilities that were abandoned by the MgC that may have mining equipment here already?)
(Finding the promised equipment in one of the industrialized cities which is a task on its own, and secondarily it’ll allow you to see some other planet issues you might be interested in handling later)
The towns to the west, namely Swordbreak and South Warren are good places to start, and the shuttle that brought Kolbeckite and his partner here is available to transfer you to one of the other settlements before needing to return to the local star to complete fueling operations.
All the crew needs is which of the two you'd like to investigate first
The shuttle sets down and the three of you climb aboard. The geon interpreter has other duties to attend to here in town and needs to complete his own report. He will meet with you when it is time to head back into the tunnels.
heading east, Swordbreak is a town where the mega corporations were treated with a much higher degree of violence. The wrecks of burned out fighting vehicles have been piled in a massive junk heap at the edge of town and you can see the sparks of scavengers with torches twinkling away in the wreck field like a star scape on the ground.
Several of the skyscrapers still show hasty patch repairs and bomb damage from the street fighting here and a large section of the warehouse row exists as nothing but burned foundations now where corp officers tried to starve out the populace.
The starport seems more intact than the surrounding area. It has been a fortress for corp soldiers and their officers, and only after much negotiation and the arrival of CBSS ground troops with accompanying mech forces was a surrender achieved.
Kolbeckite looks out the window of the shuttle at the approaching town. Once they land and disembark, he and Pyrophanite take in their surroundings
[Basic] "This place has seen strife" remarks Pyrophanite.
Kolbeckite turns to Lyuba.
"Are you familiar with this place? Who do we go to in order to find the materials requested by the tribe?"
"Never had the pleasure before. If were lucky someone with authority is still based out here and hasn't been shipped off somewhere that needs more help. We should ask locals where our guys are hanging out." (maybe a connect roll would make sense?)
The CBSS soldiers are based in the "red zone" around a large six building housing complex of towers. It has been reinforced with thick walls, guard towers, and modified inside to have some luxuries available to make this off world posting more enjoyable for those forced to be stationed here.
You can see patrols on the streets around this complex, along with some public outreach officials doing their best to help the situation here but aid has been choked off for some time due to the sprawling mess of resource officers on the capital.
Lyuba sighs taking his hat off to slick back his sweaty hair and straightens himself up. He walks off to find these resource officers and hop his time as a shift manager would help him untangle some equipment.
(Id like to speak to a resource officer to see what he can move to do)
(It was to set the scene, your roll helped you find the red zone , and had cleared the way so you can access it )
02:27
The resource officer is attached to the supply company here on base and with personal orders from the party chair and knowing where to apply some pressure you have a meeting with the head quarter master within the hour
02:27
He is a beleaguered looking man, spending long hours trying to do more with less
I thank the seller of them and drop them 20credits. Once we get that done I find Kolbeckite seeing if they are ready to talk to this Officer.
15:14
(I think I have a new goal for myself to this mission. It would go like this.
"Get the requisitions officer to give us a mission to assist in getting the supplies."
So instead of just getting the supplies we need to assist them in some way.)
(This was already going to be the structure of the mission)
1
22:14
Everything is prepared and the quartermaster is ready to meet. He is not sure what you are bringing to his attention but seems to be a fairly well connected individual
"I am fine with you taking the lead. Youre more official anyhow. Ill just try and butter him up with a gift." (To Kolbeckite before entry)
00:34
"Hello officer. I am Scout Lyuba Lebedeva and my associates Kolbeckite and Pyrophanite. Before we truely start talking would you like to share in some cigarettes. Took a moment to find some here."
"Welcome to Swordbreak. You've come at a bad time b ut I am always pleased to entertain the officers of the CBSS. What brings you all the way out here?"
Kolbeckite affords the officer all manner of etiquette while they speak.
"Thank you quartermaster. We have just come from the Geon tribe we recently made contact with near Frostford. Relations are well and they have expressed interest in joining the CBSS and to allow us to study the crystals native to their caves in exchange for drills and mining equipment as well as medical supplies and technologies. We came here to source these materials to get the trade started. Would you be in a position to help the CBSS with this pioneer effort?"
He chooses his words carefully, trying to nudge an agreement out of the officer.
“If I had the materials available I would. Aid has been slow in coming you see. You flew here. You saw the city.
The local resource officers back on Pelasgon have aid in a stranglehold here. Things come in and they’re locked down under red tape. Or they don’t come in at all.
Ministers at home have been replaced but they’re making due with records that were another man’s. Maybe a personal visit with some documentation of what you have seen, and some personal delivery of the goods back here will set the record straight as it were”
(what is the setting-appropriate equivalent of a signed letter, or just a signature? Kolbeckite wants to ask the officer to provide one so he can take it back to the capital to lend more gravitas to his plea when he gets there)
"If you would not mind, could you write a brief letter explaining the situation and sign it? I aim to make my case as convincing as possible, so that this goes smoothly."
(Sorry I was busier than usual at work today)
"I think that sounds fairly good to me. I am fully willing to do such work but before we do is there any sites left over from the Conflict that may be storehouses or such equipment? Goods I could possibly search and catalog the materials to this endevor of ours."
(Yeh you can write it in the notes at the bottom of your character sheet, as well as posting it here for consistency, so now you are 1/90 days into getting heal-0)
Arriving back at Pelasgon you are permitted to land in the capital city, though at a star port on the outskirts. A staff car has been set aside for your use along with a driver but no official instruction has come from the party.
Most of the resource node planning and the distribution of supplies is handled in a building near the Precognitive Conclave as members frequently confer with party resource officers to try and predict any upcoming shortfalls so they can be prevented.
The capital is made of blocky buildings that are at least clean from the decades of soot that once used to cover them.
Drab colors even here are present and a ash soaked rain begins coming down above. Soldiers with umbrellas make a professional walk as you drive up to the building - allowing you to enter with some protection from the weather
THere is a directory on the wall upon entering the main lobby, showing resource distribution is on the third floor of the buildiing. THere is no officer currently listed as being in charge of the unit, though the offices up there are shown to be occupied. At least some staff members are on hand
A staircase and elevator both lead up to the third floor. There are soldiers, diplomats and a few junior members of the precognitive conclave handling small matters on this bottom floor, trying to triage the information heading to the upper floors of the building. You can see that they are massively overwhelmed by the inflow from across the CBSS.
Kolbeckite approaches a precog conclave member. "Hello. We have a letter here from the officer stationed on Swordbreak on Al-Thynnian for the resource distributino officers here." He produces the letter.
One of the precogntivies looks it over.
"I see. Mining supplies and vehicles. These were marked as destroyed in transit, but we also have the same serial numbers listed as in holding in....three different warehouses across the planet...at the same time...
my my. This is a mess. We'll need to get to the bottom of this and figure out why this has happened. Duplicating shipments or copying information like this is only something the senior node officers are able to do. Generally it is just to correct a mistake or make a last minute edit, but for it to be formatted like this... no no, this is incorrect. "
"With the numbers repeated this many times and scattered across so many possible sites on this planet, I do not think this was a simple rounding error or accounting mistake"
“They don’t. Not this version at least. I can tell you what cities the warehouses are in and you might find a name or some more detailed paperwork tied to one of the resource officers. Electronically, and without seeing the actual items listed here, its too hard to figure out what might be involved, or who”(edited)
New Kazan, Debriska, and Samara Heavy Industries are all flagged as locations where these supplies might be.
A party grav flyer is secured for your investigation within the half hour and is being prepared in the roof of the administration center here in Pelga Primis(edited)
On the flight Lyuba would field check his equipment nervous about the people that would do things like this. Smugglers in the CBSS. Smuggling at home before them was small and easy. But messing with the plans of the CBSS as a whole... That has real consequences. Bloody consequences. He really hoped it wasn't smugglers
"Kolbeckite and Pyrophanite, do you have guns?"
(let's give him a laser rifle)
Pyrophanite twists his shoulder, a rifle swinging outwards from behind his back on a belt. "I'm here for when words fail."
New Kazan is a large city on the western side of the planet. It is one of the more populous regions and is capable of making all manner of advanced technologically advanced goods. The population here is in the low millions and they take pride in never having an incident so bad the CBSS needed to send investigators or political officers. In every way they seek to be the most dutiful party officials.
Landing in the small spaceport the city maintains another staff car is on hand for you to use along with a driver as needed- common protocol is having one standing by as officials may arrive at any time.
Driving across town quickly you don’t take in much of the sights until you reach the sprawling distribution warehouse office itself.
The office is several floors and looks to be cleaned meticulously all the time. The bottom floor office is a lot like the place you just left only this time staffed with shipping clerks and juniors from the officers school who are training for a life of service on the administrative side of the polity. There are 20 people staffing this bottom floor
There is an information desk and docket lookup here that the clerks can use to find things within the sprawling warehouses. It can also access more information than what would be available in the capital
(Lyuba has an administer of 0, so this check is a 15, text incoming)
14:15
A resource officer named Lobinsky signed for the shipment here, but there is no one who has ever worked here by that name after you spend several hours reviewing personnel files. You manage to get an image of the man who did sign and impersonate this officer, and you can tell without needing to search the warehouses physically that the supplies you are after are not here.
They have been possibly diverted to one of the other two locations by this mystery individual.
14:16
A few people here recognize the man. He said he was new and from the capital, and had official looking credentials that withstood an official inspection
Kolbeckite turns to Lyuba, as sheepishly as a humanoid mountain can look.
"Lyuba, might it be worth the trouble to contact whatever office handles official credentials to see if this man was given credentials by them? If we exhaust the avenue of those credentials being official we can at least rule that out and be certain they are forgeries."
"It certainly could be... but now we've started I don't want to let up and give up our lead. I say hit the other warehouses and if nothing comes of it then we go to the forgeries."
(Well we know from the admin roll that physically finding the missing goods here is a dead end, so our stuff is in another settlement. Did you want to just keep going down the list in order to the next one?)
(Yeah thats what I ment but after all this time I think a solid lead to an active member of this group is better than hopping around and hoping. We should go after this guy.) (You were right kolbeckite!)
The credential office is in the capital and after traveling there you can see they are busy as ever. The CBSS has undergone what some call the first sphere of expansion and as a result hundreds of new party officials are being minted over the passing months
Each is assigned a duty and issued party credentials to handle them. They’re rarely reviewed again unless someone is killed in service , or promoted. The idea of retiring seems like anathema for now.
A desk clerk and several empty terminals make up the ground floor of this office. Used to seeing party members the attendant seems unfazed, though stands ready to help if needed.(edited)
Kolbeckite approaches the clerk and greets them. Pyrophanite shows the clerk the picture of the man while Kolbeckite explains that certain goods have gone missing and that the paper trail, as it were, suggests foul play. He then asks if the man has been issued official credentials.
(Per the CRB, even in mandate society any telepathically gained evidence could not be used in legal action against someone, since you only have the psychic's word about what they saw or felt when interrogating someone)
21:29
(So i mean, i guess it depends how far you plan to go, but generally its considered distasteful to do to a non-hostile person)
(Okay understood I was gonna check and see if they get nervous about us brinign this person up but if that is the case then nevermind I wouldnt jeprodize us like that)
From facial expressions they do not seem nervous, as they just expedite paperwork and don't actually make decisions here- so they would theoretically be without blame and have nothing to fear from the Party.
Running a quick search through the data-base they have here, this man was never issued official credentials, but is linked to a profile that was added to their system for six minutes, before being deleted again afterwards.
"Hrm, I wonder. Are we able to perhaps rescue the information from the data drives? Perhaps some trace has been left?" Kolbeckite looks hopeful, but is not too familiar with technology of this level
There is a location tag associated with the added data, an apartment here in Debriska in a slum neighborhood, known as one of the small enclaves where people have somewhat resisted the Party and its promises for change. These were former intellectuals, experts, and others who saw their fields dry up as the will of the people moved forward.
"Ahhh... the lost and forgotten in the name of progress. Guess even the heart of progress has its darker corners. Kolbeckite and Pyrophanite, you two should get some stun weapons. I doubt that well be welcome there with open arms."(edited)
The Geon try to peek at the monitor in front of Lyuba.
"You found him, friend?" asks Kolbeckite
Pyrophanite grasps his rifle "I have my gun right here, it'll work well enough"
Kolbeckite hums, the sound of a distant earthquake "We want to intimidate them, not kill them, friend"
Pyrophanite looks to Lyuba as if asking his opinion
(Alrighty, the rules for them copied from Relics of the Lost are also on our unified rules document in #rules-and-books )
02:54
Three flop rifles are requisitioned for you and are delivered to the facility as you finish getting the last of the information together. It is unknown if your target will be at the address, but it is the best lead you have
(A type A works for it, there aren't restraints in the book Lyuba so you cant buy something that doesnt exist)
15:06
Two flop rifles are delivered, along with a length of rope, that is all that can be requisitioned at the moment. Armed with a rough idea of the area, and an approximation of the face of the enemy, there is nothing left to do but set out
The staff car spends half an hour bringing you across town to the warrens where your target is known to live. It is presumed the people on the street here look out for one another, and an official vehicle moving too deep into the neighborhood would arouse suspicious or alert anyone a bit too nosy to your purpose here.
The driver agrees to wait for your signal a few blocks away. Flop rifles are pulled from factory casings and are powered up with the click of a power cell being connected.
"Friend Lyuba, one thing worries me about this. We don't have evidence of foul play. Even if we do find this person all we can do is ask questions and if he shuts down, we don't have good enough reason to use these" Kolbeckite says, lifting the flop rifle to make his point
Everyone looks like a potential informant as you pass by, trying to take side streets, fire escapes, and other methods not relying on the main roads to reach the apartment building in question.
You know your suspect is on the 4th floor. A fire escape winds up the side of the building, and there is also the main door where a gang of children are playing some kind of game with marbles and dice.
(on a com message so nobody hears us talking)
"I think Pyrophanite should wait outside watching the fire escape while we head in and verbally confront the Mark."
The children quickly pick up their game and move away as they see you approach. There is no doorman here but you can see that your suspect maintains a residence here by the names on the call box and on the mailboxes in the lobby.
An old woman with a shopping cart looks to be checking her mail, but the lobby is otherwise quiet
Kolbeckite follows suit, trying to keep as quiet as he can. Pyro meanwhile tries to find a good spot outside with a view to the fire escape and if he finds one he will announce quietly through the com "In position"
Outside the apartment in question you can hear the holoscreen on inside. An old soccer game is being played on it, and you can hear the sounds of someone cooking. Your suspect is at home, and does not seem aware anyone is coming.
There is a clatter of something falling inside at the sudden noise against the door. There is another bang, as it sounds like someone is tearing through the apartment
Hearing the sounds Lyuba would first attempt to open the door without busting it down but if its locked hed try and bash it down with his abnormal strength
21:05
(also if I cant knock the door down by force in like 3 seconds hed escalate to using his lazer pistol to destroy the lock )
The door flies open with an expert kick. Splintered wood and the better part of the door itself fall into the apartment to reveal your suspect hastily throwing things into a bag to take with him.
It appears he had been intending to flee
Kolbeckite does the same and points the rifle at the man. He then attempts to intimidate the man into surrendering.
"Don't make this worse for yourself. Come quietly. Be smart."
Once hes sat down I find a chair for both I and Kolbeckite and begin talking to him.
"Hello (Insert name of suspect). It seems that you may have told the truth about who you are and what you are doing. I am here to give you a chance to rectify this."
04:33
(Maybe an intimidation move though idk if this guy would be afraid.)
04:33
(Also Kolbeckite might look into the bag he was packing?)
Kolbeckite nods lazily and wanders around the flat, examining it.
"Mr. Lobinsky, you have cooperated very well so far. This buys you an easier time of your rehabilitation. You keep being this well behaved, you'll be done with this before you know it. Now I will not beat around the bush, you know what you did. Just tell us why, and we can move this forward with minimal amount of pain for you"
"Are you telling me, Mr. Lobinsky, that you are on the opposite side of this metaphorical chess board to the party? I hope that's not what you are telling me as then that would make my attempt at protecting your interests and, frankly, family, a lot harder. Would you perhaps care to try again?"
"A piece is painted by its creator, but lets get rid of the analogies. I am not doing what I have done willingly. I am doing it because I was forced into it, by someone who has leverage over me. Their interests are not aligned with the Party"
"What leverage do they have over you? It is perhaps something we can help with. And who is this person, what can you tell us about them?"
Kolbeckite looks out the window to make sure no one is watching and draws the curtains shut if there are any.
"The Crimson Claws, they were on Vari, and now are working their way here. My handler's name was Zhu, but we never met in person, just ordered to do things through electronics"
"Seems like this Artem had a bad habit of killing his friends... And with us finding you I have to think that your employer wont be pleased about it. I am prepared to make a deal with you. If you decided to hide anything from us it only means youre protecting the same people who don't hesitate to kill their own. If you were to put forth any of that information you may have kept hidden I will get you a lighter sentence. Maybe just a low end smuggling charge, a year. Maybe even get you witness protection if the person is high end enough. How is that?"(edited)
23:45
(not sure if whatever he says is gonna be true so maybe something like a charisma check/int. Less he tells the truth and its a charisma to get him to flip)
(does he have his phone ghat he spoke to Zhu on his person?)
07:05
(also just so I am concrete about something. Irl we can track cell activatity because all cell towers talk to eachother and they can triangulate to a phone. With that said we are in the age of sail yet when we talk/send messages out to a location you have to kinda shotgun it and hope the ship who picks it up carries it to your desired destinatio. You also need to have it adtesssed otherwise the calls will go out everywhere but never know who its supposed to hit up. Could we try and triangulate using old data from both Lobinsky and Artems devices? Ik kinda shot in the dark for how lore and worlds work but its something to maybe find their bosses beyond a whole ass planet)(edited)
(What you’re suggesting wouldn’t work beyond the bounds of the planet since even in this setting we don’t have faster than light comms between worlds in this region)
14:51
(But we could take this guy into custody and go to Vadhat to try to get Artem’s belongings from the space station, and see if that yields anything)
14:51
(The immediate issue though of what did they do with the mining equipment is still unsolved and this guy was the one who actually did it, so we can try to finish this quest before starting your wider investigation)
(Yeah that's exactly what I want to do. How about you Kolbeckite? What do you want to do since this is both of our mission? Also is there any chance that we could keep him with us? Ik its probs a no but I think its a 50/50 shot hed die in prison. If he helps us maybe he might have more use.)(edited)
A small squad of five men can be sent to accompany you, most of the armed forces on planet are handling other important duties and cannot be moved from them right now.
Air transport, with the reinforcements, will be able to fly you from this settlement to the location of the mine where you can secure the mining supplies for yourself, and uphold one of your commitments.
The prisoner is taken into custody as air transport arrives to pick you up an hour later. He is whisked off on a separate vehicle to a party holding center until such a time he may not need to be interrogated
Lyuba introduces himself to the security team of ours
(Does Lyuba find out anything about the Quarry? Layout or a map/ something to give him an advantage before we go in blind?)(edited)
(I always provide a map when we get to the actual encounter, wasnt sure if you guys were going to get right to it or what so i didnt want to just whisk us off before anyone had a chance)
A map of the mine interior from the days where it was still producing is found through your research. It’s out of date and though the tunnels are likely the same it does not account for any changes or security measures that have been put into place since then
(Is the river completely covered like an underground river or does it have surface access. If no surface access is it possible to enter via the river and climb up from some point?)
(Thanks I thought I read that somewhere. I am thinking of putting them both on a route to give us and the team eyes on before we enter. Plus hey river scouted will probs be good for the planet or something.)
(Would you like to pilot the drones? Id be willing to spend another 1k+ to upgrade the Primitive Drone to a stalker and put a gun on it with some armor)
(Okay so overall youd have a plus 0. I guess I should also ask if youre interested in this mission anymore. Im fine going on my own if you feel like you have stuff more up your alley/fun to do? No pressure either way.)
21:14
(also I read it wrong not int/prog but int or prog + relevant weapon skill so probs around a +1/+0)(edited)
(decent chance. plus I got backup and unless they have heavy weapons ill just be downed and hope they have a pension for kidnapping. moreover I want you to be having fun. with or without me.)
As Kolbeckite informs Lyuba that they will be departing to other missions he puts up a brave face even though his heart sinks a little at the parting.
"Well it is what it is my friend. But here, a gift for you so you can remember me by."
He produces a primitive knife that has an old Vadhat fairy tale inscribed into the blade.
"Now get out of here before you make some party member ornery and I can cry mourning your departure in peace!" he chuckles.
Kolbeckite seems to maintain his expression as he receives the gift, and bows his head slightly.
"It has been an honour friend Lyuba. We will meet again, of that I am sure"
He shakes the scouts hand and so does Pyrophanite, who thanks him for everything, before they both depart with a final farewell
Both of the Geon depart, leaving Lubya and the small combat team to begin their plan for the mine.
(So, we were going to land nearby and go in the front door, but you also brought up the river. What we end up doing/how we get there depends on your plan, so let me know how to proceed)
The cuttlefish has an effective range of a kilometer, requiring you to stay close as operator. The shuttle sets down within a kilometer of the quarry, following the river. No one is sure what the current does once it vanishes underground and re-emerges inside.
(Youd have to pilot it down river and into the mine. We currently don’t know how big the openings are. Ect. That’s what the drone was supposed to be doing I thought )
(Ooohhhh! Okay yes. That sounds perfectly fine but could I also wanted to use it to see if we could get the team in via the river. If we cant thats okay just the description didnt click for if we could follow it down safely.)
(You were confusing me , all I’m trying to do is make sure I understand you)
The ship sets down a kilometer from the mine and you begin assembling the drone. The fins move on their own after a few minutes and the control rig for it comes to life as it is placed into the water.
Imaging comes on a few seconds later and the drone begins to swim with your group slowly following from the shore.
The shadow of the large mountain falls over you. You’re not sure if anyone or anything might be watching from the higher slopes
05:32
After the first two hundred meters the drone finds the deepest part of the river and it appears as though in another one hundred meters the water will flow beneath the mountain. Lights begin to click on , illuminating the passage ahead.
)notice/wis)
Silt is suspended in the flowing waters, and it makes seeing the way ahead difficult. Dark shapes appear almost instantly out of the gloomy river and you narrowly avoid them at the last few split seconds each time. You're not able to get much of a view since you are working so hard to avoid the rocky obstacles.
Your team will need to do the same if they end up using the river. A massive stream of bubbles rises up from the depths as the drone moves on, close to the site of the mine, before it violently bucks, distorting the image feed from the camera before the connection is entirely lost.
Checking the controls, you are still in range, and the problem must be from the drone itself
"Blyad!!! Cuttlefish is lost... Looks like well have to go through the front door. Make sure flops and stunners are ready we want as many to interrogate as possible."
Lyuba has the team move up and once near the entrance of the cave he activates his primitive drone and sends it in to scout ahead.
200m from the quarry entry, the drone takes off and begins buzzing toward the entry doors of the mine. You can see a camera nestled above the door slowly extending to get a look at the approaching drone
"alright team, no way I can see to get in without outing our advance. But on the bright side if I can do this well enough we will know what's ahead of us. I like input when we are in a safe place. So any ideas from you five. Or just letting me follow my guts?"
"Arright then, lets Zoom it!"
(I'd like to try and use the dron to fly in and explore the building before we enter it. And in case the software doesnt record its own video ill have a soldire use their phone to record what im seeing.)
Coming in from the southwest the drone sees a flickering light ahead that is either a torch or a bonfire. Several dead end branches lead to the hub there, and a large wooden turntable is in the middle of the room. Crates of mining tools, a few loose ones, and a man smoking a cigarette are in the chamber, and he perks up, as he hears the buzzing sound of the drone's engines
Seeing the drone approach, the guard hefts his weapon, and fires a burst into the front of the primitive drone.
It is hit, and destroyed. The last thing the camera feed sees is the man running deeper into the mine, no doubt to warn others.
"Alright men one bogie minimum. No armor with a combat rifle. Keep your guard up. When you seem hit them with your flops till they are down and dont let up! On me."
And we begin moving in
(basic movement plan for our entry. We split into teams of three one red one yellow. I am in yellow. We push up to each of those points till we hit contact. Then whoever makes contact the second team attempts to flank.)
The troop moved in and splits into two teams , gradually pushing forward into the darkness of the mine.
At the junction ahead (first chamber of yellow’s path) where the drone has been downed you see two guards there with rifles primed. Theyre 20m away and have seen the lights.
(Initiative)
Lyuba will try to close the distance to get to cover and fire at the enemy's. Calling out to red team and having my bois get into position as well to fire.
One of the two guards is hit by the energized ball of stunning power. He manages to keep his feet, though is dropped a second later as the other two members of your team hit him with shots of their own.
The remaining guard returns fire with his combat rifle, not sharing the same qualms about keeping you alive. One of the soldiers next to you is hit, and you can see the gunshot is terminal, blowing out through the back of the man's helmet. (17/8)
Your other team is still a minute away (Back to Lubya)(edited)
The shot fails to connect, but the remaining soldier with Lyuba has better luck, and the second of the two guards falls, stunned. They will have use of their limbs again in a moment or two, swift action must be taken to get them under control
The scene is over quickly, and by the time you begin getting the stunned bodies bound, yellow team joins you in the clearing. Wordlessly, ammunition is taken from the downed man and passed out to the rest of the team- just in case.
The time for honoring him can come later.
Lyuba hogties the guards so they can't get off to anywhere and has the teams continue their path reloading his rifle.
"Move back to your positions and let's keep moving. keep an eye out we don't know if there are more "(edited)
Moving on from this chamber, you approach a bridge moving over the river from outside. You can see the remains of your drone smashed on the shore, 5m below, but it is out of reach for now.
A tripwire is at waist level on the far side of the bridge, what whatever it is connected to is hidden on the back of its corner posts.
(makes note of the demo charge so I can pick it up later)
Lyuba after his work is done signals for his guys to move on him and pushes from cover to cover following our route.
Crossing the bridge, it seems you are approaching the terminal chamber of this mine and can see the covered forms of large earth movers and crates of new hand tools. This looks to be the items you were after- and three smugglers are within the same chamber, 20m away covering behind stacked piles of crates and boxes, looking out into the darkness of the mine. It seems the flashlight beam has been spotted, and they are on guard- prepared to fire
Lyuba calls out to them from behind cover
"This is the CBSS Security. If there is someone in charge of your I would speak with them. You can stay in cover too. Not like we have much place to go."
"Would you prefer I call in more reinforcements? One of your guards killed one of ours. And as you know law enforcement doesnt take kindly to those who harm their own. Lets be reasonable and discuss your surrender properly before anyone else is harmed"(edited)
"I think you misunderstand me. Your on our homeworld. Been here for quite a while by this point and thats a bit humiliating. If we need to wash away that mark with our blood then so be it but I feel as though the party wouldnt mind. And as a soldire of the party I will gladly pay it.
On the other hand we could avoid all this. Nobody here cares about you three grunts anyhow. We want your bosses. So how about this. You three surrender. Give me all the information that you have on your employer and I personally will have it so only the man who shot my officer will be held. Ill even add that in fact that you were hostages not even part of this whole fiasco. You have my word on that and your freedom in days. I beg you lay down your weapons and consider."
(Maitena is the spot. You wouldn’t know what the fleet looks like really. No in character reason for you to be involved at the macro strategic level, but I’m anticipating a CBSs space battle there soon for everyone to take part in
(Thank you both, and totally understandable. I am curious about if we have any starship captian foci players due to me about to level up just now.)
Lyuba having the supplies and guards disarm allows them to go and once they leave the cave informs command of three people exiting the quarry and need to be on both a no fly list and under survialance till this investigation is cleared. Just so they cant warn anyone about whats happend. They would then call for the resources department to ship out something to take these supplies to the geon and complete our deal. As well as an ambulance to take our fallen teammate home. Lyuba says a few words over his body.
With all that done id try to get this to command asap so the chairman can be informed directly.(kinda like what kol did) lastly before he leaves he will take as many of the three assault rifles that did not commit a crime by shooting at us (and like find a way to store them/sell them for extra cash if that's acceptable? If not then he'll leave them)
(That’s fine. And 3xp 5000 credits for this mission too, and the amount of hoops you’d have to jump through to try to sell military weapons that were stolen in the first place would land you in more trouble than it’s worth for a paltry few hundred credits)
(So at this point Lyuba is wanting to prove himself so he can get in a ship and command one. Or I could basically press the information on yo the military brass that they should pick me and then have Lyuba do something else? Im okay with going back to Al-thynniyan and do more exploration until the fight happens. Last idea would try and avoid the fight all together and convince these fine upstarts to join the CBSS instead of open war. What do you think?)
(They won’t listen to joining you that’s been tried a bunch in the past and consistently killing their operatives isn’t winning you any points. I’d rather we do something else for a bit so we aren’t just waiting for other missions to finish for the space battle)
(Sure! I'm not very sure where that is on the map. Do we have a guide to what each system holds for planets or is it just what you have on world anvil?)(edited)
(Well hexes can usually contain more than just one stellar body. In the site sectors without number you can easily open up a hex and see whats in it but the map doesnt have names for the hexes but instead just the Primary world in said hex. Makes me think like I'm missing what is there unless it is that you just have only the one planet per hex thing. I just dont know.)
(There's generally only one inhabited planet per hex with a system in it for the sake of my own sanity. If there are barren worlds, gas giants, moons, or asteroid fields or anything like that, the world anvil would include that when discussing whats in the system)(edited)
22:59
(You're confusing yourself by bringing outside information that isnt really relevant to this game or how I run it into this)(edited)
Return to Al-Thynninan is arranged , specifically to see the city of sword break as CBSS peacekeepers have a presence there but there is little interaction with the citizens. Party officials want insight as to daily life there and as you’re between assignments they’ve decided to send you instead
(If there is no downtime lyuba would instead of going to anything official head to a local drinking establishment to get to know the local identity as best as possible)(edited)
(Al-Thynnian is in the next hex, so just a day of space travel, being on a space ship im not sure what you could really do to learn conditions on the ground, since there's no comms in spike space)
(I'm looking for people who know Sword Break and have an idea of how the CBSS could help them out. Someone like an off duty public official or a group of drinkers who have loosened lips cuz the drinks
(right but what class of people, this world was formerly owned my megacorps before the CBSS took over, different social classes might want different things, is there a group in particular you're trying to make inroads with?)
(I think due to me being raised on Vadhat it would make most sense going with ex corporate members. Maybe I can do something to ease the transition a bit more or just relate somehow.)
You find a small former corporate bar near the middle of downtown Swordbreak, in the shadow of one of the looted skyscrapers. CBSS banners and pennants hang from it now, though it does not seem like business goes on inside anymore.
The bouncer is about to say something, but seeing a CBSS uniform decides better of it and moves off to the side of the door.
A group of low level managers that once held sway over dozens of people sits in the corner booth drinking the glass cups of piss colored beer. None of them look particularly happy about their positions in life now and many have the pains and callouses known to the working class now to match.
Lyuba would buy the bottle and glasses of whatever is the best this establishment has to offer. (Insert amount).
"Well hello there. You seem to have a lack of your usual here. If I may. (Pours glasses) I'd like to share mine in exchange of your time."
"hmm I must say you men. You seem like you did something else a while ago. The callouses on your hands are hard but newly so? Tell me what is it you used to do on this world?"
They all worked in various levels of middle management on this world, overseeing teams of corporate book keeping teams or labor teams , and serving as intermediary between them and higher level management.
"why were you not instead placed in positions where your skills would most be affective? The whole idea is to put things where they are best suited to help us all?"
“Managing work gangs is something that we don’t do anymore. The workers mobilize themselves , the upper management now works for your state department here. We don’t have the types of skills you need and are caught in the middle
"is there no educators on world at the moment? Maybe I can start a program in proper training so your skills are not put to waste and throw off any resentment toward the party."
“We had nice jobs and good lives before the CBSS destabilized the planet. There was no reason for what you did aside from we were capitalists and on your borders and you didn’t like that.”
"As an official member of the party after your planet was seized I cannot comment on such a thing as the "need" for planetary conquest. Yet. As a former capitalist myself you must have some enterprising roots in you. You worked the system to your best abilities while in it, no? Just do so again. The teachers I could send would only be here to make it so you can set up here to your own bennifit. If not that what is it that we can do to help alleviate this tension in the here and now so we all can work together."(edited)
“Save your propaganda for someone who will listen. You’re making promises you and the party won’t deliver on. Your “teachers” will just hide the issue”
(to be more clear I think lyuba is spending a few days online looking at public forums and looking into/ going to any upcoming town meetings happening.)
(not really no. Im not looking to participate but look for things that need fixing that the CBSS could actively do for these people to prove were here to bennifit them. Ear on the ground more like )
A meeting is planned for the following night, where people come to vent about local problems. The city council here has an approval rating of 19% and do not seem to be doing mcuh to ingrate the party on the citizens living here in town.
(so if you want to go to see what people are complaining about to bring to the attention of the party thats a good avenue to go down, but hopping up there and more propaganda i think the people here would be kind of immune to. Swordbreak surrendered since South Warren was absolutely leveled with street fighting in the earlier days of the invasion, so these people had actual comfortable lives that were lost when the regime changed)
(Arright then! I should be back properly for a while now. If we still have time before the asteroid base raid here is what I would do.)
Lyuba would continue looking for complaints that we can actually put work into. As well as look towards the City Council and hopefully schedule a meeting with someone of their group. With aims to up their approval rating and while doing so get them to aid in our support
The lack of information jobs, or jobs where intellectual skills are valued rather than just simple labor in resource production or manufacturing is one of the main complaints you see coming in, shaded with differnet language- but the core issue remains the same.
The local councilors are CBSS officials appointed to oversee the transition from its former corporate leadership to something more befitting of the party. Town Hall is the location of their offices and here on party business you don't need to make an appointment for security to let you though.
Hurriedly they assemble into a board room and allow you to sit so you can ask your questions.
"Greetings brothers and sisters,
My name is Lyuba Lebedeva. I have come to your new world in hopes to aid in solidifying our presence and aiding our new citizens. In recent days I have attended a few local meetings and spoken to members formerly associated with the capitalist government. They are showing a large dose of dissatisfaction with us. In addition a poll shows us only having an approval raiting of 19%.
I have not come here empty handed with only criticism. Ive a bare-bones idea of finding and implementing a project to redirect persons with the skill out of the manual labor groups and put them in skilled work positions. Maybe even construction of a new source of income for this world. We just need to find that product or resource on world.
I am also here to help you and hear out your own ideas to push foreward objectives here."(edited)
They seem to appreciate your enthusiasm in trying to find a solution to the problem here. This world primarily trafficked in data beforehand and that function has been overtaken by other more trustworthy and established CBSS governmental offices. Finding new mysteries or resources in the wilds might create some demand for new factories and facilities that would be forced to re-employ these people to keep up with demand, but no scouting expeditions have been launched.
All existing CBSS scouts and officials have been focused on peacekeeping and maintaining the civil order.
"Well that is a route I can pursue personally here. I shall begin doing surveys in areas close by then continue to expand out. In addition I shall check with the newly discovered Geon and see if they require skilled labor due to the new materials we have delivered them.
If there is no other needs of this council for me shall refit myself and attempt to gather a team to expidite my progress."
(Has the planet been scanned from orbit? I know it was assaulted by our armed forces but I figured that scanners wernt looking for resources. If not then how much would it cost to charter a ship to do so? In addition could I check records from before the Invasion that could help me get a baring for resources on the planet.)
(you don't have henchkeeper so cannot command NPCs. We know what the surface of the world looks like but orbital scans aren't fine tuned enough to find specific resources on small pieces of land)
(I was looking for buying assistance actually like in the service areas of the book such as technicians or laborers. Not official henchmen. In essence what im trying to do is build a team to go into places of interest and instead of taking the risk of missing something that they might catch. in total hope im hoping they could also assist my rolls later fictionally. None the less I have money that I can spend so may as well use it.)
(sounds fine to me.)
lyuba would like to look into records of sights of interest before and after the invasion to find a place to start the survey project
Across the river to the west, the southern reach of the planet here has not been explored. It is a region of empty tundra, with patches of dense forest and rocky lowlands. It is uncertain what, if any resources might be there.
21:25
Alternatively, there is a chain of islands to the east that likewise have not known the boots of any exploration parties in the history of the planet.
Lyuba will start with going across the west river. Starting at the forest south of the Radio Array then continuing south.
(Whats the deal with the radio array btw? Is it up and working or also destroyed durring the invasion?)
(We don't actually know. this planet was one me, corn , and another player who's not here anymore made when we played quiet year. It was added to the map as a "discover something new" , but nobody has been there)
(... Oh! Shoot okay if that is something you are okay with exploring as well we could make that our first stop. If though you arent prepared for there I am totally up just going south of it.)

(by exoskeleton do you mean the armor mod? I'm also not sure what you mean by repair parts. There are Spare Parts, and those are items in the core rulebook, they are 50 credits each)(edited)
20:29
(you do not have the face for a black slab right now, either)
(first off thanks I just misremembering the name of the spare parts!
Also yes the armor mod exoskeloton correct

The radio station is a 3 days drive across the planet's surface, using bridges to cross rivers where possible. With a destination in mind, sticking to the roads and not exploring off trail is the method of travel. 10km from the radio towers you can see the trio of tall masts rising out of the horizon. A snowstorm is also brewing ahead and obscures other details from this distance.
(New Goal: Get a signal out from the Radio Station.)
20:56
Lyuba seeing the incoming snow storm looks through his Binoculars to find a route to the Station for expedited speed and safety. Then attempts to make the long march to the Radio Towers.
You look and see you can shorten your course by taking an off-road path toward the settlement, it is more direct but the terrain is choppier. You manage to arrive at the foot of the closest radio mast just as the whiteout sets in- a small metal homestead is just a few meters to the right of the tower's large footprint. There were other towers and buildings but the storm is so intense you cannot see anything right now.
There doesn’t seem to be anyone living here. No one looks to have been here in some time.
The door opens and you already feel better being inside. Power looks to come from a small power cell receptacle in the wall where one can be plugged in. The current one is empty
Lights and heat begin filling the small survival cabin. You can also see a small radio setup on a table in here but upon turning it on, there is no noise coming out of it. The tower must be offline and will have to wait for the weather to clear to investigate. A small hatch in the floor has a simple latch keeping it closed.
The hatch is pulled open revealing a ladder heading a few meters into the ground. A storm cellar has been built here. You can feel it warming up but not enough to spoil the packaged food and spare parts down here. There is also a flaregun, and a rifle for hunting with 20 rounds of ammunition.
Good little base out here Lyuba thinks to himself. In the meantime he'll look for some scraps to make a makeshift sign so he can not spook whoever owns this building if they come here .
Sign says : surveyor Lyuba Lebadeva has taken up residents in this shelter due to weather. Only temporary.
There is a grease pencil in the color black and some scrap metal in the basement you can use. You find a small log book back upstairs near the radio after you hang your sign outside.
(Good morning sorry for the no play yesterday just busy)
If there is heat in here Lyuba will bunker up and rest till the day in hopes of the storm ending. If it doesn't by tomorrow through he will have to proceed on his mission regardless
Night passes and close to dawn the storm seems to blow itself out. There are still light flurries outside, but nothing that will make surveying the area unsafe. The region is blanketed in a sleepy sense of quiet, and you're unsure if anyone is present.
With the wind gone now, you can see two other tall radio masts, their associated storm shelters like this one, and a small circle of others shelters with a large storage building 2 kilometers away from here.
The tower looks to be damaged near the peak where the transmitter lies. Something has fused the circuit boxes up there and bent the tower near its peak somewhat.
(there isn’t a climbing harness on your sheet and you aren’t in a place to just go buy one. You’ve got 20m of rope and a grapnel launcher but that’s only about half the length of the tower )
The supplies you have with you get you up the first half of the tower with no trouble, but the rope runs out and you're forced to climb hand over hand, unsupported, the remainder of the way. Hanging on amid high winds and the height you see the boxes have been fused due to a lightning strike.
They're going to need to be repaired and the transmitted likewise will need to be entirely replaced.
Lyuba seeing what he needs will decend the tower . Moving to the shelter he will leave a large majority of his equipment only taking his
Tent
Laz Pistol
Medium Advanced Weapon
Backpack
Then starts to head back to his vehicle for the spare parts he left behind.
The vehicle is half buried in a snowdrift, but at least the paintjob wasn't white you think to yourself as you begin shoveling it out. The work takes several hours and the late afternoon sun brings the promise of darkness soon, likely almost as soon as you're back. Carrying the parts is a heavy and ponderous walk through the snow.
Lyuba thinks about doing the climb in the night but thinks against it. Too much risk for mistakes. He just settles down and cooks a meal before bed setting his alarms for first light
There is a sharp knock on the door in the middle of the night. You hear the sound of flame cracking outside and the gentle glow of a flashlight illuminated the door frame
"My name is Lyuba Lebedeva, and I deeply apologize for my trespassing. I am actually here in attempts to see if I can get the towers up and running again."
(Are there any windows for me to see outside? If not I'm just getting suited up so I can meet them properly)
Two men and a tracking dog are at the door. Another three are 10m back in the snow, looking out at the dark surroundings. They've each got a flashlight, though only the door team has them lit right now.
The dog is sitting and not growling. Each of them has a hunting rifle and a hunting knife from what you can see on a quick visible inspection. Thick fur lined survival gear blocks most of the lines that would normally help you identify concealed weapons.
Lyuba fully steps out and raised one hand slowly in greeting.
"Hello there. Might I know who you are. I did leave a sign also." Gently gesturing to the log
"I apologize, now I do have some work to do here with this tower. Maybe we can come to an arrangement to allow me to stay and work towards its repair for a ammount of time. Is there something I could do for you or is it material compensation that you would be more interested in?"
"that's just it. If you repair that tower, people are going to know we are here. We have a quiet life, off the grid, alone, private, and we keep to ourselves. We don't ask anyone for anything and everything we known we have made, or traded for with our own labors. You fix that tower, now everyone's going to know there is life out here, and people are going to start to wander"
"... Hmm you make a very valid point. Specially with the dammned CBSS being here. I can't promise me leaving will save you from that in the long run. Maybe instead of us sending folks up here to bother you and your life style one of your own is skilled in working these towers?"
22:07
"that would leave you as stewards of this place running the repairs and upgrades. This would also give you leverage agaisnt the CBSS and determining where your land is and the like. But then again these are just ideas for the long run"(edited)
(just for my own IRL understanding, you will want to put them on the grid, but you're giving ideas for them to maintain some territory once you do so?)
(pretty much. Make their territory private if they can help maintain and work the raido towers for us. Probably will need to discuss what they consider thiers but I feel like rn hes just trying to see if they are even receptical to the idea at all. Also welk need to see if it actually includes the main radio building too or just the outlying towers.)(edited)
"We don't need leverage if no one knows we are here. We have gone on this way for over a decade, and no one has ever had interest to come this far out just to see more ice. Who sent you out here?"
"The CBSS. They've been having a minor bit of social and economic friction after the fighting died down. Im here looking for ways to get people back into specialist work and finding new opportunities for our new citizenry."(edited)
"So the party will come no matter what. It seems we have no choice but to accept your offer. We will learn to maintain these arrays, and in return our land will remain our own, free from party interference so long as the arrays are kept in good repair. Can we agree?"
Lyuba smiles and internally is thankful for there understanding. "We can! Ill have you draw up some territorial maps when you get some time to relax and get the paperwork done and sent with me and my employers. Then if you want we can get to work on the towers."
19:03
(OOC I am just happy these folks get to live their lives for at least a little longer in peace. I'd hate to see them displaced by us.)
(okay, so you want them to mark their territory , and in exchange to giving validity to their claim they're going to let you service the towers? is that what you're trying to do here?)O
(Okay, we need to communicate this to the polity though, its not for me to decide, but for the group of players)
20:24
(pop a message in #cbss-chairmans-council , but i think what you're doing is a sound idea worth discussing, i just wanted clarity so i could help answer questions that come up if you're not around)
(Its not for me to make agreements on things before your polity Mates get a chance to sound off. I’ll see if anyone else brings anything up )
00:24
(I’m not going to edit any maps until there’s more than one person in agreement. Editing political layers and borders on inkarnate is a pain and I don’t want to do it just to possibly undo it)
(I feel as those are two very different points. One is asking how we will handel the array after its done being repaired and how its people will be treated. The other is just working on the project and maybe help the locals in case something comes up. Am I missing something?)
(If you can’t guarantee how the people will be treated they’re not going to allow you to fix it unless you suddenly plan to make this situation very violent )
"We need to see some kind of official paperwork, and then you can service the towers, and show us how to do it. We've had our ancestors cheated before"
"Yes, by the previous megacorp government back when the planet was first being settled. We have a chance to make those wrongs right, and dont want to be cheated again"
"As it should have been. Would you prefer I head to the city again and retrieve someone with the seal of approval or would you want to come with me to this. I am fine with either outcome. Ill leave my equipment too so I can bring more as well if that is alright?"
They do not wish to leave their land, or their families, and will examine whatever proof or document you come back with for themselves when you return.
"sounds good to me." lyuba says and begins to unpack his gear in a corner out of their way. once he finishes he will head off to the car and retrun to town to get 1 the offical to come with him so they can do the law and territory exchange. 2 more spare parts. I will also have to pay for more truck rental time.
(3xp, 5000 credits, if we're just going to leave all this here then we will have enough to fix one array, and they'll have to work out getting the others fixed)
Returning to the array after a few days in town drafting the agreement , you return with a Political officer in charge of land distribution, and with a former corporate communications tech expert who has now found a better job in polity service than they did working for the megacorps.
He is going to be showing the locals how to manage the technology here, so they can teach themselves and future generations after.
Heading south the woods become loose copses of trees. You can see a herd of large game animals running from the sound of the oncoming car , away from you and into the woods.
I find a decent place to park so the vehicle has cover from the elements. Then proceed to go out and follow some of these big game animals to see where they roost. (Maybe start a tourism industry of hunting/nature exploration)
(Doesn’t matter what the skill is then since we can’t do anything either way with that )
The creatures seem elusive and evasive as you spend the better part of the day trying different methods of sneaking up on them and tracking them
At the near end of the day Lyuba feels like he's been made a joke by the beasts. he sets up his camp and attempts to use his survey scanner to at least try and get something before he rests for the night
The survey scanner doesn’t show any minerals in the area. These types of scanners don’t work on biological things and it doesn’t yield any information about the forest
A heavy cutting blade slides through the tent wall as you sleep, as two bandits outside have come across the camp. The strung technology and disturbance of the herd animals, as well as general noise from the vehicle had alerted them earlier in the day, and the lack of security arrangements made for sleeping encouraged them to take a look through your camp. You can see outside that they had been in the process of ransacking the vehicle before discovering your tent a short distance away.
(2 for them)
The down swing of the machette narrowly misses you as you roll to the side on the floor of your tent, trapped in melee range with the bandit.
(its a -4 since you're prone, but a 16 still hits, its a full move to stand up )
The baton cracks out and hits the raider on the wrist and he yelps, but keeps a hand on his weapon.
The wild swing of the blade misses again, cutting a hole in the bottom of the tent where you had been just a second ago.
(15/6) The blade chops into your arm this time, as the confines of the tent keep you from creating as mcuh space as you would like, but it ensures the fight remains one on one for the moment.
Lyuba shouts at the cut but his limited training has him following the bandits arm on the back swing to strike at their armpit. Trying to disable their swinging arm
(22 hit/5Dmg)
A slash across the arm sees the bandit go rigid and fall over as the stun baton locks his nervous system up. He gapes like a fish on land before his struggling stops.
As you emerge from the melee, his companion who is 10m away near the car fires a shot from his pistol but misses
Lyuba stands becoming furious and leering at the enemy combatant. Using his move action to put his stun button away as he pulls out his Flop Rifle and taking aim.
(you cant use a move action to ready a stowed item. It has to be a main action. There is also no entry for it with your readied/stowed gear at the bottom, but you're massively overburdened by adding 2 more encumbrance for it too, and cant have any more readied items as you're 2 over already. Additionally since you have so much gear on you, your movement speed would be 3m at best when you do move. )
(...Fuck I'm so sorry my sheet is super wack. This is totally on me and after this fight I shall fix it. As for now could I just drop my Medkit to free up my Readied slots and then just throw my Stun Buton at him?)
19:01
(Medkit is readied.)
19:03
(Just like Lyuba tires to lunge at the bandit but nearly trips over his dangling medkit. he throws it off but sees the bandit about to shoot him again and desperatly throws his Stun Buton at him)
(you'd still have to spend the main action to ready the flop rifle. You can drop the medkit and throw the baton which would be d20+dex mod and then - 2 for improved weapon
The baton spins end over end, hitting the gunman, though he has enoguh strength to return fire.
(17/1) The shot wings you, making contact but fired from shaking hands
Stunned, this bandit also falls, their attempted looting of your camp stopped by quick thinking and better equipment, though they'll be stirring again in a few moments.
Lyuba gets his grapple launcher and tries to tie up this one he shot. If he has more he will cut the rope and try thing up the other one as well dragging him out yo his comrade and disarming them.
"You see you seem to have some knowledge of this place. Good enough skill to track my movements and prep a... adequate ambush.
I am looking for places of interest. Hunting fields, mineable veins of ore, lost structures of the old Mandate, or just a tourist attraction. Now I also acknowledge to you that I choose not to kill you! I have every right to do so and you owe me for my kindness to outlaws like yourself. In addition, I will pay you each 500 credits if we find a location of worth out there.
I won't untie you! You did try to kill me for my supplies. But I will keep you fed and watered. If I feel like you are attempting to lead me into a trap I will kill you like a dog! But until that moment I will treat you both with civility and genuine care.
Once I am taken to a place of worth I am willing to let you go free with your credits. Maybe even allow you to better yourselves. Is this something you can or are willing to do?"(edited)
Being paid is better than being killed, and tied as they are , your mercy is the only thing stopping this from becoming an execution. They agree to help for the moment.
"Great news, as you are so full of energy we can start right now. Where do you think you can take me to satisfy my search?
(If this causes exhaustion or system strain im okay with that I just want to get something out of them and am kinda spooked to be around them asleep since I dont have handcuffs. Plus they might get some system strain as well)
16:00
(I also go pick up my stun Buton and medkit)(edited)
16:03
*I also have low light goggles if that helps for tonight along with a navcomp)
16:07
*Stowing my grapnel launcher, Dataslab in the car, and hand over a Navcomp to the Bandits)(edited)
Looking at your maps of the area they fix several things on it they know to be wrong.
There is a mine that early settlers here used and did not get much of the way into the vein before the megacorps set up shop here and the village near it was left abandoned. The bandits used to base their operations out of that town but moved closer to the population centers in recent years.
"How much would it cost you to make it part? If not money other bennifits? My position allows off world access. This could truely be a fresh start. Buy this is only a suggestion. To both of you. Or whoever tells me."(edited)
(ik this is long and I am sorry. I just thought it would be more interesting trying this than just hunting down and killing a bandit camp)
17:52
"you're correct about that. But the party is already going to do that. Rehabilitation is not something they have a huge history of, you see. They see a bunch of dead beat men with something akin to a target reticule.
Tho my point is you're right. The party will come. A maximum of 2 years before they find you. Another replacement for me who sees you only as criminal scum to be shot like dogs. Though, I see opportunity. You have proven to be capable of something very few humans are capable of. Surviving. Even less people making themselves a force to be reckoned with. Yet if it was not I you may have been successful. There are not too many people like me.
So to be fully succinct and not drag this out too much I have a dream where we put you either in jail. You'll resist and as protocol of the CBSS is to put you down. Simple. Or, I find folks of ill repute to be trained to do what you already do on a larger scale. You've heard of privateers, Mercenaries, Private Military Companies, and or Canaries. I think the CBSS could benefit rather than have a net population loss because of you all. This way you and your people while working for us will have the big guns and do it away from our worlds. Or to people like you who say no. I just truly and honestly want to see your lives actually have a chance for a decent ending rather than just the CBSS coming in with a shil and glassing your camp in the night. Seems so unnecessary."
"Go fuck yourself CBSS. This is party propaganda. We're not going to tell you where our friends are, and we told you where resources are. Cut us loose or kill us, but we're not giving you any more"(edited)
Lyuba puts his hands up and sighs.
"I am nothing if not a man of my word. But do remember to inform your friends of my offer. Maybe they will see it for what it is."
(Did these guys have backpacks? I have a plan but idk if I have to lose mine to do it.)
(Good to know, thanks)
Lyuba as he is at the car for a moment gathering up his cash looks to his backpack and gets an Idea. Pulling out his knife he tries to cut a minor hole in the lining of the backpack by the padding. He then slides in his compad in so later he can attempt to track where these bandits go. once inside he attempts to fix the bag to make it look as nothing had happend and with that he fills the bag with half his rations (6). He leaves the Bandits weapons in the car and locks it as he moves on over to them. This time with his Med-Advance weapon out in the open letting them know without words that the stunner isn't what they will get this time. Trying to keep an eye on them he expends some of his wild psychic Psi-Effort .
(Level-0: Observe emotional states in a target. Intense
emotions provide a single word or image related
to the focus of the feelings.)
Just being cautious as he unties them so he isn't surprised if they get violent again.
Lyuba hand on weapons hilt while sheathed goes over and unties them then thrusts the bag to them.
"Go now. You aren't getting your weapons back and light will fail you eventually. I have done my honest best for you. Mayhaps you will see better before doom falls upon you again."
23:57
(I subtracted 1000 credits from my sheet as well as were the terms of the deal)
After his message is sent to party headquarters on planet he packs up everything. Still tired and exhausted and moves on to that mine.
(What was the gun I got counted as? And how much ammo is in it?)
(I think I have managed that with my last edit to my sheet. Just my stun buton and laser pistol are readied and I have a bundle of glowbugs (6), survival kit, med-kit, and survey scanner on me stowed. the rest will wait in my vehicle. If I could I would like to somehow hide my flop rifle somewhere so if my vehicle is raided again that is not lost.
Also, I am curious in why you think I am over-encumbered? In the book it rules it says I can have half my str in readied and the full amount in stowed. I have an 18 str. Are you reading it as characters can only carry two readied and four stowed at any given time and that is what the limit is? Because that isn't how I interpreted that section at all. Just trying to understand and not seeing it.)(edited)
22:07
(reading from pg. 62 of the main swnre RP book)
22:10
(as always I defer to your decision I just haven't had anyone actually enforce the encumbrance rules before so this is a learning experience for me here.)
(you're talking about your sheet now after you've set almost everything to "other" and not how it was when I brought it up, you had 13/9 items readied and all 18 points out of 18 of things stowed. )(edited)
22:24
(when I checked your sheet last you had not done this yet, so I brought it up again so we would have an opportunity to fix it before we did more shopping. I don't know when you fixed things during that time, but obviously this game is not being done in real time, so quoting rulebook pages at me and all whatever is going on in the above passages is theatrics we don't need)
(I apologize, I realize I am coming off like a rules lawyer quoting the book as I did. I was only trying attempting to convey that something had me confused. Putting exactly what had me so confused up for you to view without needing to dig around aimlessly. And with the system hacked I dont wanted to ask before assuming something I read from the core was how it was still. Your language on the subject still has me confused though. Are we still using the core book encumbrance where half my str is able to be readied and full have stowed items with no encumbrance penalty or something else entirely? As I said before I haven't used encumbrance tracking in this system before and am sorry for not knowing off hand.)
(the sheet automatically calculates this for you. The numbers on the sheet for your readied and stowed totals are correct based on your stats, you being over those limits is being over them)(edited)
23:44
)the only time those numbers would ever be wrong would be if you were the geon race, which you're not, we would fix those in the raw data Gm side of your sheet anyway, or if you got something like an exoskeleton, power armor, ect, and even then if you equip power armor those totals automatically adjust for you)
If there are any vantage points looking down on the town and mine lyuba would drive the car up there and observe the area with his binoculars. Ensuring that the bandits didnt lie about there being no more outlaw presence here.
The bandits have not lied it seems. The town is empty and consists of a handful of run down buildings and a water tower that has since collapsed on itself
You believe after a day long survey of the town the buildings here can mostly be repaired and repurposed, but it will take a large influx of supplies from the polity to do so- still less than founding a new colony from scratch.
A new water system, new source of food, and a restart of the local mining industry would be needed to shake any colonial dependence on shipments from the capital.
Feeling content with himself he makes a report on his dataslab and sends it out to CBSS command so that if anything happens to him it wont go to waste.
After that he gathers his stuff and vehicle in front of the mine enterance and goes delving inside.
(Path route:
Purple- is the car if I can park it up there
Red- is first route examining the main entry and seeing if the mine cart track still works finishing with the top outcrops and clearing them of anything murdurous and ore veins
Yellow- Me examining the water and last outcrop of this room and checking walls for ore
Green- slow and steady walking checking walls for ore mainly
Blue- is more ore hunting
White- is more cautious due to the larger room but still ore hunting
Black- is gonna be faster in hopes that anything bad that could have happend had already happend with more scanning.
Hopefully this is good enough of a plan outline for you to work with.)
Lyuba after leaving the car is all geared up and ready to go pulling down his lowlight goggles and having an inactive glowbug in one hand and a survey scanner in the other. He begins his delve.
Original message was deleted or could not be loaded.
(Out of curiosity in the whole larger scheme of the game here. Are the Psychic Crystals found on Al-Thynniyan currently being studied for use or does the faction need to do something to make it a project? Alternatively could a player fund an investigation on the properties of the crystals?)
(Awesome! I think I am game for more exploration of Al-Thynniyan and finishing up there proper. Also after that is finished I was thinking of hunting after the bandits that I let flee. The only thing that may be useful is talking to the governor of Al in hopes to smooze him with my assistance in gearing the Council to make the university? But I can understand if thats not interesting to do.
order of things interested
1. Political Smoozing
2. More exploration
3. Bandit hunting)
(You promised them amnesty as a CBSS representative. You would be willfully turning your back on that promise and it will damage Cbss credibility here if you do that. You still can but , I just want to make you aware of that so there’s no whining later that I Never said anything )(edited)
(who did I offer amnesty to? I believe I told the bandits that I/the CBSS would be back eventually and they'd only get amnesty if they did my weird "Expendables" squad idea.)
"How much would it cost you to make it part? If not money other bennifits? My position allows off world access. This could truely be a fresh start. Buy this is only a suggestion. To both of you. Or whoever tells me." (edited)
(Yeah no not them they're cool and pretty nice. I am referring to the bandits that shot me in my sleep, raided my camp while exploring and that I put a tracker in so I could hopefully triangulate their base location. Idk if you have those two connected but I can find out later and keep it more a mystery.)
As Lyuba finished his call with no luck on the bandit trace he heads down to the car rental and rents a vehicle out for 14 days
two sets of rope
And a new grapnel launcher.
After that hed head right back to the abandoned town where he left his expedition at.
The town is still empty. The buildings haven’t changed much other than a fresh dusting of snow on them since you’ve been here last. It does not look like anyone but you had wandered through the area based on no other footprints and the lack of other signs of life(edited)
(Awesome sauce!)
Lyuba after that look around would enter the cave system following the previous paths he had planned out for exploration. Activating his glow bug as he entered
Entering (Red Path) you come to the first room where a reflecting pool open to the chilly sky has collected meltwater. You hear the sounds of something retreating further into the cave from this room, and the water in the reflecting pool is still rippling as though something had been disturbing it just seconds ago.
Following the path you’ve mapped out in red you do not see anything but the bare rock ground and occasional patch of mushrooms growing against the ledges where ground meets cave wall
These mushrooms have likewise not been documented before. There may have been data existing in local servers once, but the scream would have destroyed it.
The yellow path heads south deeper into the cave where you see more small reflecting pools. Water heater also moving here at the passage of something fleeing down the tunnel out of your sight
There is nothing matching anything in the bioscanner or anything you have seen before. Whatever it is, it seems to be fleeing ahead of you as you move through the cave system.
You're not able to make much out in the darkness but the descending hook talon that smashes into your midsection lets you know you're under attack and hunter has become the hunted
You sense the shadowy creature narrowly avoiding the blow but you catch a small piece of it with the crackling head (shock goes through)
The hooked talon swings out of the dark once again, followed by one from its other arm. (miss, 16/7), Both of them batter you as the cornered creature decides its now time to fight back
(if you're trying to move out of melee and we're not taking a main action for fighting withdrawal, the creature is going to get an attack of opportunity)
20:15
(N ot sure whats RP and what's an actual deliberate moving the character's position )
The baton sparks off a wall and you think collides with the creature's flank poorly. Backing out of combat a talon hooks you across the midsection but the opportune strike is also poorly aimed.
Two more slashes come out of the darkness toward you, too fast to anticipate with the gloomy conditions (18/8, and Crit/6)
(Yeah I'd like to capture it if possible. More things to study and know plus it did a hell of a number on me once. Might as well try something else than the First time)(edited)
(okay I can do that. In addition id like to buy
-drone control rig-20k
-dermal armor-20k
-tertiary arm-5k
-exoskeloton mod for my VacSuit-4k
-Lastly 2 primitive drones with observation suites 1k
(Drugs/extra)
-Rush(price/legal to buy??)
-local animal bait
-and a shovel.
No idea if there base price is different on this world or not. Also couldnt find the cyberwear in a quick glance. If I cant get everything on the cyberwear ill just take the dermal armor)
(Bait is an item from distant lights , so you can find the cost there or on our equipment sheet. The mod needs to either be left here to be done or you can wait a week in town to venture out with it
Rush is 70 credits as it says in the cost per dose column. It can be bought )
18:06
(You’d be down for about a week recovering from all the cyberware too)
(sounds good to all of that. I will pay for an extra week on the car as well. once im recovered ill head straight back to the cave and barring any intteruption begin digging a massive pit trap hole.)
23:37
(also I must be blind cuz I couldnt find the distant lights book in the iron stars source books. Is it somewhere else?)
(finally fixed the ac problem. The phone version hides the innate AC tick-track and I fixed it that way. I think I should be good to start using my drone to investigate the cave now)(edited)
